Mérida Hosts The Annual Tianguis Turistico Convention

The Tianguis Turístico is the most important tourism convention in Mexico. This year, the 45th edition of the event was held in Merida for the very first time, from the 16th to the 19th of November. More than forty countries and an impressive eight hundred companies took part in this year’s event. Many touted the Tianguis Turístico in Mérida as one of the most successful events ever with the event breaking countless records.

Despite being postponed numerous times due to the ongoing pandemic, the Tianguis Turístico in Mérida embraced the event’s slogan “the rebirth of tourism in Mexico”. Merida was proud to host such a successful event this year hosting buyers, companies, and exhibitors from all over the world. The president of Mexico,

Andrés Manuel López Obrador inaugurated the event and business people from more than forty different nations had very productive talks lasting three days to discuss the future of tourism in the country.

Yucatan Leads From The Front

As it is the very first time that the Tianguis Turístico in Mérida has happened, the Yucatan took this opportunity to showcase the incredible attractions our great state has to offer. With such diverse wildlife, natural beauty, stunning colonial architecture, and rich Mayan culture in the Yucatan, the event provided a fantastic platform for visitors to learn more about the Yucatan and Merida, the state’s capital.

Yucatan Secretary of Tourism, Michelle Fridman, stated that the state will strive to lead the return to tourism in the country. She spoke about how the pandemic was a major crisis for the tourism sector, affecting both leisure tourism and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions). Fridman highlighted the fact that with more countries having success with the vaccination that now is the time to return to face-to-face events and the Yucatan will help to lead the way.

Words Of Encouragement From Officials

The 45th edition of the Tianguis Turístico in Mérida was inaugurated by president Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Mr. Obrador, along with the Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, and the governor of Yucatán, Mauricio Vila Dosal led the opening ceremony, showcasing the importance of the event. The Mexican president stated how important the Yucatan Peninsula is with its incredible archeological sites, as well as the many current and historic Mayan cities that occupy the State.

Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués also highlighted that at the end of 2021, there will be an estimated thirty-one million international tourists expected to have arrived in Mexico. These tourists are predicted to account for an economic income of approximately 18.1 billion dollars and contribute to an average annual hotel occupancy of 46 percent. This means that by the end of 2022, tourism should have returned to the same levels as in 2019 before the impact of the pandemic was ever felt.
